Memory

Hi Friends,

Ugh, today was a LONG and crazy day today...I'm amazed I can think straight with everything going through my head these days. I'm having practically as much aphasia and memory loss as mom is lately what with being so tired and stressed.

So, went over to see mom after work tonight...Lilly arrived a few minutes before me, and mom was sleeping, but as usual I cannot go a day without talking to her/letting her know I was there, so I unzipped her bed and she woke up. She was very pleased to see us, and we had a great visit. She REMEMBERED that she talked to Betty on the phone earlier this evening!!!! She told us they didn't really talk long or about much, but she actually remembered talking to her!!! It was awesome, and when she was talking about it, her words were so clear and made total sense. Lilly and I were SO impressed, and I'm very pleased with this. I forgot to mention the part yesterday too right after lunch...she was still finishing drinking her "Boost" drink, but she had to go in and talk with the neuropsychologist. I made her leave her drink in the dining room with us, and then Pam and I were going to meet with Dinh while she was in there, so I figured I'd just throw out the rest of the drink. Dinh ended up not being in his office at that point, so we just waited in the dining room for mom...when she came back in, as I mentioned, we talked with the neuropsychologist as a group. Right after he left, mom suddenly realized she was supposed to come back to her drink, and I had to admit I had thrown it away! Oops! I can't assume she won't remember anymore!

I am in the process of becoming her legal guardian, and an attorney was appointed her "guardian ad litum," which is basically someone who makes sure she knows her rights and is okay with me becoming her guardian, so that person had to "interview" mom today. I talked to the woman tonight, and she said mom was saying over and over how sweet I was to do that for her, and how good I am. :) So cute. After I got off the phone with the attorney (I talked to her after work while I was with mom...Lilly and she were chatting while I was on the phone), mom wanted to know who I was talking to...so that prompted an explanation again about the guardianship, and how I was going to be appointed her legal guardian. She said "YOU'RE going to be MY legal guardian? Wow. I thought I was the guardian!" So of course I explained that she had been, but that because of her brain injury, sometimes she gets confused and has problems with her memory, so this was to make sure that her finances are taken care of and that all the right decisions are made for her care (not that I'm so sure of that, but...)...she thanked me, and said she supposed that was necessary.

Then we were all getting tired, so we decided it was time for Lilly and I to go home. I am SO tired after such a crazy day, so I'm off to bed and right back at it tomorrow. But Jillian and Pam plan to visit her during the day (yay!), and of course I will go after work. Thanks for the ice cream, Lil (it was 2 for $3 at Walgreen's)! Thanks for your comments today on this ol' blog...they really give me a boost to read them at the end of the day, especially when I have a hard day. Keep 'em comin'. Love to all.
