A Grand hOpening
Hi Friends,
That title was for my friend Natalie, but it is definitely true...today was the big move to our brand new hospital building, and the closure of the old one. I was the team leader at the old building, and we shut down the old unit...it was bittersweet...it will be great to be in the shiny new building where everything is nice and clean and working, but my very first nursing job was at the old building so it's a little sad to be leaving it. Today was surreal...we've been planning and getting ready for this move for what seems like forever, and the day finally came and now it's done. Crazy. Don't worry though, I'll get over it.
Despite how crazy we thought it was going to be, it went well, and I was able to have a lunch break and visit mom...she is doing steadily better everytime I see and talk to her...she was less tearful today than she has been the last couple of days...still emotional, but she didn't cry at just about everything today...and she was okay with me leaving to go back to work, which was also good. I went over after work to see her again, and when I first got there, she was sleeping, so I just hung out. She did wake up though and so we hung out and chatted for awhile...I showed her all the pictures I had brought to hang up in the room and reminded her what each one was, and asked her if she remembered them...most of them she really seemed like she did remember, which was so awesome! The day nurse told me that earlier, she'd been up in her wheelchair wheeling herself around a bit in the halls (BY HERSELF) and talking with some of the other patients!!!!!! Can you believe that?????? OH MY GOSH!!!! How amazing is that??? The nurse said she actually had to tell her it was time to get back in bed because they don't want her sitting up for too long because her rash is still healing...she never really wanted to stay up for too long before!!! She amazes me everyday.
Pam was telling me that yesterday during her speech therapy session, the therapist handed her a card mom had received from my Aunt Linda, and she told her to open it. Mom opened the envelope, took out the card, and both Pam and the therapist (Michelle) watched while mom's eyes moved back and forth and she READ THE CARD!!! When she was done, the therapist asked her whom the card was from..."Lin and Tom," she replied. WOW!!!!! Amazing.
Okay, I am so tired I'm a little nauseous, so I'm going to bed now. I hope everyone is having a good weekend...thanks so much for your continued thoughts, prayers and support. It's working, no doubt about it.
