Awesome day

Hi Friends,

Wow, what a day full of activity and good times! Despite the frigid temperatures, we braved it and broke mom out for the afternoon..."we" meaning Lilly, Pam and I. I ran an errand this morning, then picked up Lilly and then Pam in the Zipcar and we headed to the Imperial to pick mom up. Returned the car and walked a block or so to a Japanese restaurant for lunch...the first restaurant outing!!! Mom was a bit overwhelmed by the menu, but we helped her and she did manage to pick something and order it! We had a great lunch, lots of food, and we left full and satisfied. From the restaurant, we walked the 3 blocks or so to the apartment (aka the Homestead)...we were frozen by the time we got there, but mom recognized the place as soon as we walked in! We stood in the lobby and I handed her the keys and asked her to show us where to check the mail and then bring us up to her apartment. She made a beeline for the mailbox...went straight to the correct one (there are tons in there...it's a huge building)! Then she took us up on the elevator and led us straight to the correct apartment door where she opened it up with the keys! :) She LOVED hanging out with the kitties, and though Mitey was being a little shy at first, they both warmed to her and enjoyed the visit. Mom was so happy to be back in her apartment, and definitely remembered it and wished she could just stay.

After hanging out there for a bit and warming up, we went back out in the cold and...gulp...took the bus downtown. Yep, that's right...mom got on a bus! She said she was a little bit nervous about it, but that she'd be okay and wanted to do it. Luckily we didn't have to wait too long for it, and she paid her own way (she put the money in the slot and everything), and sat down. I kept asking her along the way how she was doing, and she said she was okay but that she might be quiet the first time...toward the end of the ride though, she was laughing and joking like her normal self and seemed to be just fine. Afterward, I asked her about it again and she said she'd been a little scared at first, but that it had been better than she thought. I'm so proud of her! She handled it so well!

When we got off the bus downtown, we headed to my hospital where I work...not that she hasn't been in enough hospitals these past months (by the way, 5 months tomorrow since the accident), but this was different...she wanted a tour of my work! So she got it...and was able to meet lots of different people I work with who'd been following her progress and praying for her, which was so awesome. She truly enjoyed the visit, and meeting everyone. :) She said she was glad to be able to see it because now she can picture me at work. After the tour, we were going to go to the Museum of Contemporary Art, which is right next to the hospital, but it got to be too late so instead we just got some hot drinks at Argo Tea on the 1st floor and hung out until Lilly had to leave to go to work. We parted ways with Pam and took a cab back up north and I dropped her off back at the Imperial just in time for dinner, and then I headed home myself.

What a day...thoroughly enjoyable, full of laughs, fun, and some memories...both new and old. Mom talked a lot about God today...her spiritual self is coming out and though Lilly and I teased her about it and giggled at some of the things she was saying (for those who've never talked religion with her, she's never been a religious person at all so this is a new thing), who am I to really judge? A huge thing happened to her that changed her life forever, and as she likes to say all the time to convince herself of the reality of her situation, she almost died. If she has discovered a new-found love and appreciation for God, and if that was part of what got her through what she's gotten through so far, then so be it. Having been raised by her, I was never a very religious person either, but since all this happened and since so many of you have been so fervently praying for the both of us with such awesome results thus far, I cannot deny the power of spirituality, love and prayer.

Must work tomorrow...it was crazy busy today when we were there for the tour, so I hope it slows down a bit by tomorrow. Stay warm, everyone, and thanks as always for your continued love and support. Peace to all.
