Memory

Hi Friends,

Well, a semi-productive day today...got some laundry done and hung out with mom this afternoon. Arrived to find her playing Bingo, and she had already won a game about which she was very pleased. She chose a bag of Doritos for her prize (they buy the prizes at the dollar store, and this was one of the only choices really), and we shared these and a Sprite she bought in the machine for a snack while we chatted. We decorated her room with some Easter/spring decorations to brighten things up a bit, and then had a short chat with Genevieve, the Speech Therapist. She had good things to say about mom's progress, but still reported some difficulties with short term memory, which is not a surprise to me. Mom and I agreed to plug away really hard at trying to improve this, but I fear a lot of it will always be difficult. Thus, we will have to rely on other memory strategies to compensate for this, and strive and hope for the best. Nonetheless, I am trying to come up with any strategies to help improve mom's memory, though I don't know what I'm doing really. All I know is that I must do everything I can to help. Her will to improve and go home and function counts for a lot, and I am trying to keep the faith that she will continue to make progress. Genevieve says she will begin working on household tasks with mom to prepare her for living in a home environment. A step in the right direction to be sure!

I have stayed up way too late reading a good book ("The Boleyn Inheritance" by Philippa Gregory) and must go to bed as I have to work in the morning. But I couldn't miss a night of the blog, as I know those faithful who are still reading would wonder what happened to me! :) Take care, and thank you, as Betty says in her comment on yesterday's entry, from the bottom of our hearts for your continued love and support. Peace to you all.

Amanda,
Playing "concentration" with cards is a great game for memory. Just lay the cards face down, and then the player turns over one card, and tries to find its match. After two times cards are revealed, you must recall where the cards are to match. Hope it helps, I played this with my Mom, as she had some memory lose.

Hope it helps, and its fun too. (can be played alone, or with others.
